Bury Festival, 19 May 2001

Bury St Edmunds is a medium-sized town about 14 or so miles from our centre at Newmarket. It is a very old town, and used to be home to a large abbey which was broken up in the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Each summer it has a festival of music, drama etc, and at some weekends there is morris dancing in the town (this seems a typical part of a festival these days). The local sides are Hageneth (men) and Bury Fair (women), and we were asked to join the guest sides present. Here are a few photos.

Here you see us ready to start the dance known as the 'Beaux of London City', in the style of the Northamptonshire village of Badby, and also the first part of the cast off. Click either photo to see a small movie (528k) of the final figure of the dance.
